Chlorine Dioxide is an excellent biocide for Legionella control. It has an extremely effective Legionella kill rate even at very low concentrations and as such it can be safely dosed continuously safe for use in water used by humans and animals. It is highly selective, unlike chlorine, targeting bacterial cell proteins thus allowing its use in highly contaminated process waters such as those found in cooling towers.
As a truly soluble gas chlorine dioxide, unlike chlorine, will penetrate and remove biofilm (a protective habitat where Legionella can survive and multiply) from pipe work and tanks. As it is cleared for potable water usage it can be continuously dosed in small amounts making it effective as a long term treatment rather than a short term fix like many other disinfection methods that only remove free living Legionella bacteria and have no effect on biofilm. It is also extremely soluble and can dissipate effectively through water systems, even traveling into short dead legs.
Chlorine dioxide can be used in both hot and cold water systems and will remain within the water through calorifiers, ensuring excellent control of Legionella in high risk hot water systems where Legionella kill temperatures cannot be easily maintained. It is possible to reduce water temperature when using chlorine dioxide, reducing the scald risk and energy costs associated with heating water to 60°C and distributing water at >50°C
Using the Prowater Chlorine Dioxide System for Legionella Control has the following advantages:
