Chlorine Dioxide is a superb biocide for Legionella control within cooling towers and other potentially heavily contaminated process systems. Due to its gaseous nature (even in water it is a soluble gas) it easily penetrates biofilm and removes it from fill pack, pipe work and sumps. This ensures reliability and efficiency of heat exchange systems and small bore cooling systems that can quickly become fouled with biofilm. It is also highly effective against Legionella with high kill rates even at very low concentrations.
Chlorine dioxide is a highly selective biocide and specifically targets bacterial cell proteins, ensuring that biocide is not wasted on general organic contmination. Most cooling towers run in the pH range of 7-9 and both chlorine and bromine are rendered ineffective as pH increases. The action of chlorine dioxide is unaffected by pH and as such it can be used effectively in cooling towers without the need for acid correction.
Chlorine dioxide is relatively non-corrosive at low concentrations and if properly managed will not increase corrosivity of the general process water. Due to the low environmental impact, fast degredation and lack of potentially carcinogenic by-products it is also very suitable for cooling towers where high bleed rates are required.
Using the Prowater Chlorine Dioxide System for the control of Legionella in Cooling Towers has the following advantages:
